Too Late, Too Long, and Too Short

When correction is too late and a hand becomes dead.

This page groups together several practical error cases that often create discussion at the table.

Too late

A correction is in principle too late as soon as play has visibly continued:

  • the next player has already drawn
  • or a take-up or straight has already been completed

After that, an old mistake is no longer simply undone.

Too long

A player with more than 13 active tiles is too long and therefore dead.

Consequence:

  • the round can no longer lead to a valid win for that player
  • in settlement, that player counts as 0p
  • that player may only pay

Too short

A player with fewer than 13 active tiles can no longer win in the regular way, but is not automatically fully dead.

Consequence:

  • an ordinary win is no longer possible
  • settlement can still happen

Exception

There is 1 major exception:

  • 7 flowers

That game type can still lead to a win even with fewer than 13 active tiles.

Quick check

  • A late correction is usually over as soon as the round has continued.
  • Too long means dead and 0p.
  • Too short blocks an ordinary win, but not always all settlement.
