MatjokRulebook v1.5

Invalid Tjok

When a tjok is invalid and what penalty follows.

Invalid tjok occurs when a player thinks they have won, places the hand open, and it then turns out that the hand is incorrect.

Main rule

This applies, for example, when:

  • a straight is not valid
  • a poeng is incorrect
  • a final pair is missing
  • the hand does not close correctly
Invalid tjok example: a claimed straight that is not a straight
East windEast wind
South windSouth wind
West windWest wind

After invalid tjok, play in that round stops immediately. The opened win therefore does not count.

Penalty

Use this penalty payment as a fixed table rule:

SituationPenalty
player with invalid tjok is not jonghpay the maximum outcome to every other player; jongh receives double
player with invalid tjok is jonghjongh pays every other player the maximum outcome x2

Here maximum outcome means the highest table payout. In this documentation that aligns with Man Kong as the maximum.

Settlement after that

After this penalty payment, the 3 other players may still settle their current hands among themselves.

For that, use the ordinary rules from the settlement chapter:

  • there is no valid winner
  • the player with invalid tjok falls outside this mutual comparison
  • the other 3 players compare their current hand values with each other
  • jongh also continues to receive or pay double in this settlement

Effect at the table

Therefore always check an opened win immediately:

  • does every set work
  • does the final pair work
  • does the hand close on the correct number of tiles

Quick check

  • Invalid tjok is an invalid win declaration.
  • After invalid tjok, play in the round stops immediately.
  • After that, the other 3 players may still settle their current hands among themselves.
  • Jongh always receives or pays double in this penalty rule.
