MatjokRulebook v1.5

Tjieuw-tjon

When tjieuw-tjon applies and what that warning means.

Tjieuw-tjon is a warning state. It arises when an open hand has progressed so far that a next discard can cause a heavy penalty.

Main rule

Tjieuw-tjon becomes active when 3 open combinations of the same suit are on the table:

  • in bamboo
  • in numbers
  • or in circles

From that moment on, a player who still discards a tile of that suit may have sole liability if that discard turns the warning into a winning hand of at least Sam Van.

Example: `3` open bamboo combinations on the table
2 bamboo2 bamboo
3 bamboo3 bamboo
4 bamboo4 bamboo
5 bamboo5 bamboo
5 bamboo5 bamboo
5 bamboo5 bamboo
7 bamboo7 bamboo
7 bamboo7 bamboo
7 bamboo7 bamboo

Announcement

In the main rule, the player announces tjieuw-tjon when poenging or taking up the 3rd combination, but that announcement is not mandatory.

Traditional playing style

The traditional playing style is stricter and says that announcement is in fact mandatory:

  • modern main rule: announcement recommended, not mandatory
  • traditional playing style: announcement mandatory

Effect at the table

Tjieuw-tjon itself is not yet a win and not yet a penalty. It is a warning that certain next discards can make a player liable for the whole payout.

Quick check

  • 3 open combinations of the same suit activate tjieuw-tjon.
  • The warning revolves around the risk of sole liability.
  • Main rule and traditional playing style differ on whether announcing it is mandatory.
