Table, walls, and starting setup.
Explanation of the setup
4players around a square table4walls of36tiles eachEastas the starting point of the count- a break where taking tiles begins
| Part | Meaning |
|---|---|
| East, South, West, North | fixed seating roles |
| Walls | each player builds 18 stacks of 2 tiles |
| Break | starting point for taking and replacement tiles |
| Flower or kong wall | part of the wall that remains available for replacement |
Determining the break in view
This visual shows the 2 counting steps from the basic rule:
- first the total of the roll points to the correct wall
- then that same total determines where the break falls
Dealing example
From the break, the players take:
3 times, each player takes 4 tiles. After that, each player has
12 tiles.East then takes
2 tiles: the 1st and 3rd top tiles from the remaining part of the wall.South, West, and North then each take
1 tile.Result:
- East has
14tiles - South, West, and North have
13tiles
Replacing flowers
The replacement tile always comes from the reserved part of the wall. That keeps the ordinary hand structure in order before actual turn play begins.
Quick check
- The walls lie in a square.
- The count for the correct wall runs counterclockwise from East.
- East opens the round because East has
14tiles.
