Piang-voe

The separate base value of piang-voe and its limitations.

Piang-voe is a separate traditional winning hand with a higher base value than an ordinary win.

Main rule

A piang-voe hand:

  • consists of straights of consecutive tiles
  • has a final pair that is not a dragon
  • has a final pair that is not the own wind
  • has a final pair that is not the prevailing wind

The base value of piang-voe is 40p instead of 20p.

In the traditional count, flower points may still be added. If the winning tile is self-drawn, it also gives 4p in this case.

Waiting forms from the source

The source limits piang-voe to 2 ways of waiting:

  • 2 chances, for example 2-3, waiting for 1 or 4
  • a source form explained as tan tjauw on 2 chances, for example 1-2-3-4, waiting for 1 or 4

Because the source wording is compact and traditional at this point, this page keeps that limitation close to the source.

Effect at the table

As soon as your hand would get points for a pair of dragons or for a pair of own or prevailing wind, it is no longer piang-voe. You then fall back to the ordinary base of 20p.

Source uncertainty

The extra waiting-form condition from the traditional sources remains too uncertain to write out here as a fixed rule. This page therefore stays with the clearly readable traditional core: 40p base, neutral final pair, flower points may count, and 4p for the self-drawn winning tile.

Quick check

  • Piang-voe starts at 40p.
  • A pair of dragons excludes piang-voe.
  • A pair of own or prevailing wind excludes piang-voe.
