Base Points and Set Points
The set points for poengs, kongs, and large or small tiles.
This table gives the traditional set points for matching sets. In that standard, open poengs count lighter than closed poengs. Kongs do remain heavier than poengs.
Main rule
| Set | Small tile | Large tile |
|---|---|---|
| Open poeng | 2p | 4p |
| Closed poeng | 4p | 8p |
| Open kong | 8p | 16p |
| Closed kong | 16p | 32p |
What does not count as set points
- A straight gives no set points.
- A flower does not count as a poeng, kong, or straight.
Large and small tiles
| Type | Contents |
|---|---|
| Small tiles | 2 through 8 of numbers, circles, and bamboo |
| Large tiles | 1 and 9, plus all dragons and winds |
How to use this table
Count only the matching sets:
- in your closed hand
- or open on the table
For this step, leave straights out of consideration. The source uses these set points as the basis of hand valuation before winning points, multipliers, and settlement.
Source note
That same traditional point table explicitly says that these set points apply not only to the winner, but also to the other 3 players in settlement.
Quick check
- An open poeng of
5 bamboois2p. - A closed kong of
Eastis32p. - A straight of
